History of Vaginal Steaming
Vaginal steaming is an ancient self-care practice which has a long history of use all over the world. Practices of vaginal steaming have been found in Europe, Asia, South America, Central America, Asia, the Caribbean, Africa, Pacific Islands and Hawaii. It has been traditionally used to treat gynaecological problems, to assist in postpartum care and recovery and to clear any leftover matter once the period has ended.
Why Should You Vaginal Steam?
Healthy menstrual cycles are fundamental to female reproductive health as well as female health at large. Menstruation is a monthly cleanse for the uterus, shedding and flushing out the uterine lining however, just like with other organs, lifestyle and environmental factors as well as other health challenges can affect the efficiency of this cleanse. Insufficient circulation or stagnation in this area can cause blood to congeal and the flow of fresh menstrual blood will not remove all the build up from the uterus. Signs of stagnation are brown (old) blood, cramping and clots. Regular steaming has been shown to be an effective form of treatment for -
Irregular menstrual cycles
Short menstrual cycles (27 days or less)
Long menstrual cycles (30 days or more)
PMS symptoms such as bloating, headaches and cramping
Painful, long or heavy periods
Fibroids
Cysts
Unexplained fertility issues
Hemorrhoids
Prolapse
Recurrent infections (bacterial, yeast or viral)
Postpartum recovery
Recovery from miscarriage
Vaginal dryness
How Does It Work?
Regular vaginal steaming boosts circulation, clears stagnation, cleanses the uterus and draws out old blood, clots and mucous. The steam itself is healing and cleansing but when you add herbal blends which are tailored to target your symptoms, these penetrate the tissues and ensure the healing qualities are being utilized exactly where they are needed.
In the postpartum period the amount of ‘matter’ (known as lochia) which needs to be cleansed from the uterus is greatly increased and rest and postpartum care play a big part in how efficiently this cleanse is carried out. Steaming during this time not only helps to ensure a full and complete cleanse but also aids the uterus in returning to normal size and can correct any prolapse or hemorrhoids. Incomplete postpartum healing can lead to ongoing health issues, hormonal imbalances, heavy and painful periods, cramping and pelvic floor weakness.
Women who regularly steam also note an increase in libido.
Vaginal steaming is an effective tool for gynaecological health, is non-invasive, therapeutic and empowering.
What Happens During a Vaginal Steam Session?
Prior to your session you will complete an online intake form which will allow me to assess your suitability for vaginal steaming, the duration of your steam and also which herbal blend will be the most appropriate for you. The steam itself lasts between 10-30 minutes depending on your menstrual cycles and any symptoms which may be present. There will be time before and after the steam to answer any questions you may have. I will prepare the herbal blend and place the pot of hot water and herbs in the steam sauna ready for use. Clothing on the upper body can stay on and a large cotton wrap will be used to cover the lower body. A dressing gown or similar can also be used in some cases. You will then be invited to sit down on the steam sauna and relax whilst the herbs and steam get to work.
What Can I Expect After a Vaginal Steam Session?
Immediately after steaming you are likely to feel very relaxed and most women notice they enjoy a deep sleep following a steam session. More long term positive effects include -
Improved circulation
Reduction in PMS symptoms
Increase in fertile cervical mucous
